Virtualization is taking the industry by storm. However, it’s not just for the IT professionals running your data center. Developers, testers, and architects—really the entire development team—can benefit from learning more about what virtualization options are out there. With the right knowledge, everyone on the team can help build a better development shop. In addition, you’ll be better prepared to build great applications that run well in all the various virtualization environments. In this pre-conference seminar, Brian begins by helping you understand what options are out there, including what hardware you need and what products Microsoft offers, such as Hyper-V, App-V, Med-V, and Remote Desktop Services (RDS). Together, we look at how you create and configure a development environment that takes full advantage of virtualization and compare and contrast options from local VMs, remote VMs and the supporting VDI options. Learn about managing virtual images and how to build a better relationship with your IT professionals to balance the management work and responsibility. Then, learn how your test and development teams can benefit from using the new Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 Lab Management features to complete the build-deploy-test life cycle and kill bugs faster. Learn how to spec out how much hardware and software you need and how to get the most out of the automation capabilities that are built-in. Next, learn about what options you have for code. First, learn how you can automate the virtualization environments using C#, WMI, and Windows PowerShell. Second, we dig into issues encountered when running in virtualized and VDI environments and what considerations you should make when building client and server applications that run virtually. Finally, we finish up with a review of the industry and see how Microsoft stacks up.
